Why
"Over the Clothesline"?
Yes, it may seem an odd name for a website about
Newfoundland and Labrador stories.
Well, years ago in outport Newfoundland and
Labrador, before cell phones, text messaging, and
even household telephones, people always chatted and
shared news in person.
One common way to catch up on the news, "have a
yarn" or tell a story, was while hanging the washing
outside on the clothesline. In many outports the
homes were nestled closely together along the shore,
and while out hanging clothes to dry on the clean
crisp ocean breeze, folks would talk with their
neighbours and share the stories and news of the
day.
overtheclothlines.com seemed a fitting name for a
website dedicated to sharing more Newfoundland and
Labrador stories!
